Buying Property on the Italian Islands

Where to buy property on the Italian Islands

There is something about living on an island that appeals to many overseas property buyers. Italy offers anyone looking for an island property a vast array of choice - in fact, the country has 700 of them, of which 30 are inhabited. The best known are probably Sicily, Sardinia, Elba and Capri, though Italian tourists and other intrepid travellers (and property buyers) may also know of the likes of the Pontines (also known as the Ponziane Islands) and the Pelagians, among many others.

Sicily and Sardinia are by far the largest, offering a diversity of landscapes from fine, sandy beaches to rolling countryside to volcanoes. The clear blue Mediterranean provides some idyllic coves and spectacular coastal scenery, its colourful marine life attracting snorkellers and scuba divers. Sicily is the more visited though Sardinia's major resorts are becoming better known. Both are easily reached direct from the UK.

Elba is situated off the Tuscan coast, one of seven islands and a promontory in the group. Best known as Napoleon's place of exile, its natural beauty and historic landmarks now attract a far more willing brand of holidaymaker and tourist. Capri is an expensive, chic destination, but perennially popular with an upmarket clientele who provide a source of rental income to property owners there.

The lesser known groups are typically a mix of inhabited and uninhabited islands, with resorts that are already very popular with Italian holidaymakers and often large areas of protected nature reserves. The beautiful landscapes and some of the cleanest seas in this part of the world are a magnet for wildlife as well as tourists and property buyers.
