Abu Dhabi to build ‘green’ city

Country:  Abu Dhabi

20 January 2009

Abu Dhabi has unveiled its plans to build its zero-waste, zero-carbon city, Masdar.

Following in the footsteps of eco-towns Dongtan in China, and Singapore and China’s joint effort Tianjin, Masdar will feature capsule-shaped pods running along rail lines, which will connect residents from their homes to offices and shops. Residents will live in sustainable homes made out of recycled steel, concrete and aluminium, all waste will be converted into energy, and trees lining the streets will be watered with grey water from water treatment plants.

“We’re looking beyond the current economic downturn – all investments are proceeding,” Madar’s CEO, Dr Sultan Al Jaber, told the press. “Abu Dhabi has set a new renewable energy target, providing 7% of the emirate’s total power generation capacity by 2020. Over the next few weeks, Abu Dhabi will be announcing a comprehensive energy policy, which will incubate the renewable energy sector to develop an energy portfolio that is not dependent on only oil and gas.”

Completion of the new city, which will house up to 50,000 people and create around 1,500 new businesses, is earmarked for 2016.
