9 July 2008 The Americas Brits are now the second highest foreign buyers of properties in the USA - 12% - and this figure could yet increase further given the current strength of the UK pound against the dollar. The South of the States (64%) remains the most popular place to buy property, followed by the West (26%), Midwest (5%) and the North East (5%). Unsurprisingly, nearly half of all Brits prefer to buy property for sale in Florida. Overall, fewer homes in the USA are being built year-on-year signalling that the property market remains sluggish. With rising repossesions, higher mortgage rates and declining property values across much of the country, its little wonder that US consumer confidence is currently at a 28-year low. Now is a great time to negotiate a baragain property purchase in the States. Average house price inflation in Canada has halved to around 6% over the past year, although some areas such as Saaskatoon and Regina continue to outperform the national average. Buy to let investors will be pleased to learn that annual rental yields of around 10% are still achievable. Middle East Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the UAE have recorded phenomenal property investment growth rates, fuelling strong property price growth and a robust economy in recent years. Construction activity in other emirates such as Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman are also gaining momentum, offering great potential for further capital growth over the next few years. The fact that the UAE Dirham (AED) is fixed to the weak US dollar, means that Brits can currently buy more property for their sterling at cheap borrowing rates.
