Brit arrested on Dubai fraud charges

22 May 2009 A British man has been arrested in Bankok, Thailand, after spending eight months on the run for allegedly stealing £95m from a Dubai property firm. Thai Police arrested Michael Bryan Smith, 43, in Bankok on Wednesday night after the UAE had asked the Thai authorities for their assistance in capturing the accused. It is alleged that Smith paid employees' salaries into his own bank account while working as a personnel manager at a Dubai property company, Thai police told the press. Although Smith rejects all charges against him, he is still expected to extradited to the UAE, where he will be put on trial. "He did not resist arrest. We will start his extradition process as soon as possible," police colonel Somprasong Yen-tuam said.
