Bulgarian building permits plunge in Q1 2008

The volume of building permits issued to developers in Bulgaria fell by almost 25% during the first three months of 2008, compared to Q4 2007, according to Bulgaria’s National Statistics Institute (NSI).
In Q1 2008, Bulgarian authorities issued 3,505 building permits for new projects covering around 2.55m sqm, compared to 4,637 permits covering approximately 4.46m sqm, in the previous quarter.
The greatest number of building approvals was issued in Bourgas (394), followed by Sofia (311) and Varna (236). The vast majority of these permits - 2,267 – were for residential schemes, covering 1.6m sqm, down from the 2,884 permits covering 2.41m sqm of built area issued in Q4 2007.
Bulgaria's residential property market recently topped the Knight Frank Global House Price Index Q1 2008, recording annual price growth of 30%. The greatest capital appreciation was achieved in Ruse, Vidin and Sofia.
