Bulgarian mortgages on the up

The average mortgage in Bulgaria exceeded €50,000 (£39,500) for the first time in July. The largest home loans were taken out for properties purchased in large provincial cities, most notably the capital city of Sofia, according to Investor.bg.
The rise in mortgage loans reflects the fact property prices across much of Bulgaria have appreciated significantly over the past few years. Bulgaria's residential property market recently topped the Knight Frank Global House Price Index Q1 2008, recording annual price growth of 30%. The greatest capital appreciation was achieved in Ruse, Vidin and Sofia.
Although British demand for property for sale in Bulgaria has waned of late, demand for homes in the country has risen domestically. The number of Bulgarian mortgages approved in July also rose – up 8% - compared to the previous month. International demand also remains strong, most notably amongst overseas property buyers based in Scandanavia and Russia.
