Dubai property firm post huge losses

4 August 2009 Dubai property giant Emaar, developer of the Burj Dubai, the world's tallest building, posted a $350m (£207m) loss in Q2, due largely to its unsuccessful $1bn (£600m) investment in the USA property market. Emaar Properties' results were hit hard by a 65% fall in revenue due to the Dubai housing and USA property downturns. The biggest hit to Emaar's income was a £278m total writedown of its John Laing Homes division in the USA, effectively making the subsidiary, which they purchased at the height of the US property market in 2006, worthless. “The first half of the year was extremely challenging as we steered the company through new market realities,” Chairman Mohamed Alabbar said in a statement.
