Economic growth in Europe looks bleak

The drab global economic picture has had a significantly undesirable impact on the outlook for short-term economic growth, according to a senior figure at the European Central Bank (ECB).
Addressing an audience at the Euro Finance Week conference, Juergen Stark, an executive board member of the ECB, said: “The financial crisis, which originated in the United States, has now spread across the globe. In so doing, it has greatly affected the outlook for short-term economic growth in Europe and elsewhere.”
He also admitted that there are further concerns relating to the outlook for the continent’s’ economy in the medium-term.
Stark’s comments appear to confirm that much of the strong capital growth witnessed across some of Europe’s housing markets over the past few years will not be repeated in the short to medium term.
With the eurozone currently in a technical recession, the ECB is expected to cut interest rates further in December, following a 1% reduction to 3.25% in October.
