Eurozone inflation ascends to 14-year high

Eurozone inflation has soared to a 14-year high of 3.2%, fortifying the European Central Bank’s (ECB) case for opposing interest rate cuts, despite the fact that the region’s economic growth is slowing.
Regardless of recent sharp cuts by the Federal Reserve in the US, the ECB is likely to leave its interest rate unchanged at 4% next week. Eurozone inflation had been expected to moderate in January, from December’s 3.1%. However, higher fuel and food prices have affected the European economy for longer than the ECB had initially predicted, consequently causing the unexpected rise in inflation.
Although Eurozone growth is typically less volatile than in the US, economic confidence in the region has fallen. Julian Callow of Barclays Capital believes that there is a “quite significant” chance that the EU may fall into a recession within the next couple of years. Consequently, two quarter percentage points could be cut in ECB interest rates later this year.

Properties located within the eurozone are less exposed to the risk of prices plummeting, because the region is not as reliant on financial services, as say Britain and the USA.
