Forget hotels and rent a home overseas instead, says HouseTrip

4 November 2009 Tourists traveling overseas should consider renting a property abroad rather than stay in a hotel, according to the head of HouseTrip.com. Arnaud Bertrand, director, HouseTrip.com, the newly launched property rental site, says that “no hotels” can beat the cost-effective nature of renting a holiday home on a short-term lease. When renting a holiday home people “get much more [for their money] than [staying] in a hotel: more space, more amenities, a kitchen and a host that really cares about your stay,” says Bertrand. Bertrand urges more homeowners worldwide to consider renting their properties out on a short-tem lease, as opposed to a long-lease. Bertrand adds: “There are two main reasons why landlords should opt for short-term lets over long-term leases. “Firstly, they [landlords] earn more money. On a typical flat that would rent out for £400 a week long-term, landlords could easily get £800 weekly short-term. “Secondly, a short-term holiday home letting is flexible and has less legal constraints: for instance, should the homeowner need to sell the property from one day to another, they could easily do so because they don’t have any long-term binding agreement with a tenant.” Although properties in London are currently attracting strong short-term rental demand, HouseTrip.com reports that French properties, particularly homes in Paris, and properties in Berlin, Germany, are also attracting strong rental demand. “In Europe, traditional year-round destinations like Paris and Berlin are also very popular. Otherwise, countryside rentals are always popular but it is obviously more seasonal,” concludes Bertrand.
