The Mayor of Alcaucín, a village in Málaga has been arrested along with 12 others in connection with a Spain property corruption scandal.
The Socialist Mayor, José Manuel Martín Alba, is accused of authorising the construction of around 20,000 residential properties on green belt land in the Axarquía mountain range, which is considered illegal.
Among the arrested parties are a builder from the province of Huelva, two architects, the owners of two building companies Crocasa S.L. y Alta Axarquía, and various family members of the mayor.
Police believe that there was a conflict of interest between the Crocasa and the council of Alcaucín, with the developers thought to have paid the local authority to permit the construction of the homes on green belt land, possibly by reclassifying them as building plots.
Those arrested have been charged with corruption, trafficking of influences and money laundering.
Editorial commentThis is the latest in a long line of Spanish property corruption scandals, and brings further shame on Spain. However, it is good that the Spanish authorities are finally clamping down on these cowboys.
