The number of demolition orders issued in the Arab section of East Jerusalem, Israel, has risen under the city’s new mayor, despite calls from the United Nations (UN) to cease destroying homes.
In excess of 1,000 new demolition orders have been issued during Nir Barkat's first six months in office, according to the Association for Civil Rights in Israel.
At the beginning of May, the UN called in Israel to stop all pending demolition orders in East Jerusalem, and instead, to increase residential supply for Palestinians in the region.
Construction in East Jerusalem remains a strong political issue.
