Home equity loans hit US banks

US banks are facing the prospect of further losses as home equity loan defaults in the States continue to mount up.
Falling US house prices and negligent underwriting is being blamed for falling profits and in some cases losses for both national and regional American banks.
It’s now feared that the debacle surrounding rising losses on home equity loans will culminate in the collapse of at least one US bank, which could then require government intervention.
In February this year, UK bank, Northern Rock, fell foul to the subprime crisis in the US, and has since been nationalised.
