Interest rates in Australia won’t hit zero per cent

5 March 2009 While interest rates in the UK continue to edge ever closer to zero per cent, following today’s 0.5% rate cut to 0.5%, Australia’s Reserve Bank (RBA) says that it is unlikely to slash its base rate to zero per cent. This is because its monetary policy appears to functioning to stimulate the economy, according to Glenn Stevens, the RBA Governor. With Australian interest rates currently at a 45-year low of 3.25%, the cost of borrowing money to buy property in Australia has fallen significantly. Yet, although further interest rate cuts could be on the agenda, Stevens insists that rates are unlikely to hit zero per cent, because the country’s economy is holding up well. Australia ’s base rate of 3.25% is one of the highest such rates of all the advanced economies worldwide. Nevertheless, Besa Deda, St George Bank’s chief economist, projects that rates could fall to as low as 2.25%.
