Montenegro and Albania to record highest economic growth in Balkans

Montenegro and Albania are expected to achieve the strongest economic growth in the Balkans region in 2008, according to the International Monetary Fund’s forecasts.
The economies in Montenegro and Albania are projected to grow by 7.2% and 6% respectively by the end of this year. Bulgaria and Bosnia and Herzegovina are expected to co-occupy third spot with a 5.5 per cent projected economic growth, followed by Romania (+5.4%), Macedonia (+5%), Croatia (4.2%) and Serbia (+4%).
Despite possessing relatively underdeveloped infrastructure, countries in the Balkans are attracting international investments, especially their property markets that are growing rapidly, due to its growing economic and political stability.

Construction work on part of the new corridor that will eventually connect the southern and the northern part of Albania has now got underway. The 70km highway situated between Levan and Tepelene will cost around £56m to build. The scheme is expected to be finished in early 2011.
