More shame for Cyprus

29 May 2009 Lord Jones of Cheltenham, a Liberal Democrat peer in the UK, has piled more misery on the Cypriot government in the House of Lords, after posing a question relating to title deeds in the country. He is pressing Nicosia for transparency and for clarification over the law governing title deeds, for those people investing in Cyprus property. “What progress has been made on the discussions between the British High Commission in Cyprus and the government of Cyprus, regarding the ability of United Kingdom citizens who have bought property in Cyprus to obtain title deeds, and the assurances made by the government of Cyprus to the British High Commissioner that it would introduce a bill to address that issue?” The British High Commissioner Peter Millet is now expecting to hold urgent talks with Interior Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis to clear up the matter. Late last year, the Cypriot Interior Ministry told the British government that they would introduce a bill to address the situation soon. And yet, six months later, no law has been introduced, leaving thousands of Brits who purchased property in Cyprus without the necessary title deeds.
