Mortgage applications in the States decline

21 May 2009 The number of mortgage applications in the USA dropped in the first week of May to the lowest level since March, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA). Data compiled by MBA shows that the number of applications to buy a USA property or refinance a mortgage loan fell by 8.6% to 895.6 in the week ending 8 May, from 979.7 during the week before. Although mortgage borrowing costs in the States are currently at an historic low, the fall in mortgage applications suggests that potential purchasers are waiting to see if property prices will fall further, while rising unemployment levels is not helping the housing market recovery.
