Movie star to build eco-development in Belize

Leonardo DiCaprio reportedly plans to fund the construction of an eco-resort on an island he owns off the coast of Belize.

Building work on the scheme, which will include an 80-room hotel, along with a selection of condominiums, luxury villas, and include new innovative green technologies such as hybrid power systems, reports the International Herald Tribune.

The project, which will be managed by Four Season, is expected to get underway on Blackadore Caye in 2009.

The movie star is believed to have paid around $1.75m (£1.15m) for the 104-acre island in 2005.

Commonly referred to as “Mother Nature's best-kept secret”, many more foreigners, including Brits, have purchased property in Belize in recent years, fuelling demand for homes to buy and rent. Consequently, there are number of new residential developments being constructed across the country.

Anyone considering a Belize property purchase will be pleased to learn that the country's legal system is based on British law and English is the official language.
