New US property sales increase

3 August 2009 Sales of new US homes rose by the greatest amount in over eight years in June, a further sign that the USA propertymarket is embarking on the road to recovery, following one of the worst housing downturns for decades. A report from the Department of Commerce reveals that sales appreciated by 11% in June to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 384,000, from an upwardly revised May rate of 346,000. The residential sales recorded in June was better than the 360,000 residential units initially projected for the month by economists surveyed by Thomson Reuters, and was the strongest sales pace since November 2008. In fact, sales levels have not risen so radically since December 2000. Although residential sales in the States have now risen for three months in a row, the average price of a US property sold has fallen 12% to US$206,200 (£122,405), from US$234,300 (£139,100) a year earlier and down almost 6% from US$219,000 (£130,000) in May. Editor’s comment: “The report suggests that the economic stimulus measures introduced by President Obama are working, and acts as a firm sign that the US property market is finally starting to recover.”
