Obama passes £550bn US economic stimulus bill

US president Barack Obama has approved an economic stimulus plan worth in the region of £550bn in an attempt to kick-start America’s flagging economy, and boost the country’s infrastructure projects and employment levels, which in turn could help the US property market.
The package, which was approved by congress last week, aims to rebuild infrastructure, as well as save or create around 3.5m jobs.
Obama described the huge stimulus package as “the most sweeping recovery package in our history”.
The package has been criticised by the Republicans, who feel that the measure will leave the US economy steeped in vast levels of debt for years to come.
The package comprises 36% in tax cuts and 64% in capital spending and money for social programmes.
