South Africa property prices tumble

14 July 2009 South Africa property prices recorded their greatest fall for 23 years in June, with the average value of a home in South Africa falling 4.4% year-on-year, according to the country’s largest mortggae lender.
The Absa Group said that the average price of a residential property in South Africa dropped to R924,600 (£69,133), down 0.5% month-on-month, amid the country’s first recession for 17 years. South Africa’s Reserve Bank has already cut its benchmark interest rate five times since December, dropping it to 7.5%. "Nominal house price deflation is set to continue for the rest of 2009, starting to slow down towards the end of the year," Absa said. "The lagged effect of lower interest rates and a gradual recovery in the economy from the second half of the year are factors which will contribute to an expected improvement in residential property market conditions from early 2010."
