Spain remains number one holiday home destination

28 January 2008 A year on year comparison of property investment hotspots from 2006 to 2007 reveals that Spain remained the number one holiday home destination, amongst Brits buying abroad last year, despite concerns that prices of property in Spain may fall. France came second in the poll, followed by England and Italy in third and fourth place respectively, while Portugal replaced Cyprus in fifth spot, according to holidaylettings.co.uk. Looking forward, the report predicts that the average prices of Greece property, Malta property, Croatia property and Canada property will record the greatest growth in homebuyer demand this year. South America and Eastern Europe are tipped to become the “freshest investment destinations.” Ross Elder, Managing Director of holidaylettings.co.uk comments: “The momentum and enthusiasm for investing in jet-to-let property has steamed right through 2007. Until Spain falls foul of holidaymakers there will no let-up in investment there, or demand for accommodation, but as more properties are bought with rental ROI in mind, unless the increase of holidaymakers parallels this growth we will begin to see issues regarding supply and demand. House prices in the UK undoubtedly increase buying power and create opportunities for British investors; if interest rates fall in 2008, expect to see yet more investors releasing equity to invest in property both in the UK and overseas. “In 2008 I fully expect investment in Croatia to gain further momentum, Malta and Greece too. These destinations have everything in place for tourists… The real volume of holiday home letting properties will appear where multiple and low-cost transport options are available and where owners can also spend some time in their investment, which will essentially for the time being be within Europe.”
