The pound strengthens against the dollar

3 August 2009 The UK pound’s value has appreciated to a 10-month high against the US dollar after positive data relating to the UK manufacturing sector led to greater hopes of a domestic economic recovery. The fact that the pound rose to a high of $1.69 against the dollar is great new for Brits currently looking to buy property in USA, or any other country which possesses a currency which is pegged the US currency. This is because the more favourable exchange rate inevitable lowers the cost of buying a US home, for Britons who possess sterling. The recent weakness in the dollar has seen the pound recover 25% from the 23-year low of $1.35 it hit in January this year. However, the British currency still remains way below the $2 levels witnessed in July 2008. There was also good news for Brits seeking to buy property in the eurozone, after sterling hit a one-month high against the euro.
