US banks increasingly abandoning foreclosed homes

1 April 2009 A growing number of banks are discarding an increasing volume of foreclosed USA properties because their values are now worth less than the cost of maintaining or selling it, according to a report on City Wire. This comes as bad news for hard up homeowners as they are faced with having to keep their properties. Yet, if they are unable to maintain their properties, they will face the prospect of having their homes demolished by the authorities, and will have to foot the bill. “It is what some of us think is the next wave of the crisis,” said Kermit Lind, a professor at the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and an expert on foreclosure law. In Kansas City, Rachel Foley, a lawyer who handles housing cases, said banks walking away from foreclosed properties remained “a rare occurrence two to three years ago but we're seeing them dumped more and more at the moment.” Foreclosure levels have been rising ever since the USA property boom ended in late 2006. By June 2008, around 2.75% of all home loans, or about 1.75m US mortgages, were in foreclosure, up from 2.47% in March. Another 4.58% of homeowners were behind on their payments, a slight decrease from March. Foreclosure rates were highest in California, Florida, Michigan, Nevada and Ohio.
