27 March 2009 The volume of homes sold in the United States unexpectedly rose in February as record foreclosures continue to drive down USA property prices. Home purchases increased by 5.1% month on month last month to an annual rate of 4.72m from 4.49m in January, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR). NAR data also shows that the average price of a property in the states has tumbled by 15.5% year on year, the second greatest fall on record, and distressed properties accounted for 45% of all sales. Guy LeBas, chief economist at Janney Montgomery Scott in Philadelphia, commented: "We're reaching a point where extreme sales declines will not happen, but we haven't seen stability yet. There's a long way to go." First-time buyers accounted for around half of all sales last month, led by demand for lower-priced properties, said the realtors group's chief economist Lawrence Yun.
