Calhau is a residential area just 15 minutes drive by car from Mindelo, the main town of San Vicente. Many rich Capeverdeans own a second house there, so Calhau can be considered the "holiday" village by the sea and is a very up and coming area of Cape Verde.
New international flights will go into the new airport in San Vicente late 2009 from Lisbon. San Vicente is a 40 minute internal flight from Sal. Cape Verdeans see Mindelo as their cultural heartland.
